Banjul, Gambia, Maech 1 (Infosplusgabon) – The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is to involve the Gambian military in the campaign to discourage open defecation in the country.
Mr. Modou Njai, the director of health promotion directorate, said on Thursday that they were now “at the last mile” of their campaign against open defecation which would start next Monday in Brikama, in the West Coast Region
This would be witnessed by a government official, to be followed by a caravan countrywide tour to raise awareness on the dangers of open defecation.
According to Mr. Njai, their other activity would include engagement of military officers who would be leading as they formed part of the communication task force and were part of the health promotion.
Mr. Njai noted that the country made a commitment in 2012 to end open defecation in 2017 but this could not be achieved.
“We need to embark on aggressive campaign involving all sectors, » he said. « We need to end open defecation so that we can be able to protect our women and children. Imagine if women are going out to the bush to defecate openly. They can be attacked and these are things we don’t want,” Mr. Njai said.
