Banjul, Gambia, November 1 (Infosplusgabon) –  The Gambian government has received some 600 scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies from the governments of Senegal and Nigeria for the 2017/2018 academic year,  Infosplusgabon reported Wednesday.

This was disclosed by Gambian Minister of Information and Communications Infrastructure, Demba Ali Jawo, during his monthly Press Conference.

He said Senegal has provided 50 scholarships while Nigeria provided 550 scholarships for Gambian students to access higher education in their respective countries.

According to Jawo, Gambia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (MoHERST) has also negotiated with the Senegalese Government for Gambian Students wishing to study in Senegalese Universities/institutions as private candidates to pay local rates/fees as Senegalese students do.

Jawo revealed that among the scholarships received, the ministry accordingly decided to open 25 to the general public in the areas of Science ,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Health, Agriculture and French and 10 scholarships would go to Gambia’s Technical Training Institute (GTTI) for TVET training and five scholarships to the Gambia College to support capacity development in teacher training.

He said that MoHERST has opened applications and shortlisted candidates for the undergraduate scholarships after they have sat for a joint admission and matriculation board (JAMB) examination on 30th September 2017 in The Gambia. The examination was supervised by JAMB officials from West African Examination Council and results were yet to be released by the JAMB office in Abuja.

On the issue of Gambian Passports, the Information Minister revealed that the government has taken interim measures to transition from machine readable passports to biometric passports in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization, the regulatory body for passports.

He added that machine readable passports would continue to be valid for this year 2017.
